Bacterial vaginosis and health complications

If you are pregnant and have symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, it is very important to see your GP or another health service so that you can be treated. Untreated bacterial vaginosis can cause complications in pregnancy, including premature birth and miscarriage.

Women with HIV who have bacterial vaginosis may be more likely to pass on HIV during sex and there is also a greater risk of passing on HIV to a baby during delivery.

Although bacterial vaginosis sometimes goes away by itself as the balance of bacteria in the vagina corrects itself, it is important that HIV-positive women who believe that they may have the condition are screened for it and if necessary take treatment. It is particularly important that women who are pregnant or thinking about pregnancy have their symptoms investigated and, if necessary, are treated.

Treatment is with antibiotics. Metronidazole can be used as an oral treatment. Treatment usually lasts for seven days and consists of twice-daily doses of 400mg. An alternative oral Metronidazole treatment is a single 2g dose. Another possible treatment is an antibiotic gel applied in the vagina once a day for five days. Metronidazole is available in a gel formulation, as is an antibiotic called clindamycin. It’s important that you take all the treatment prescribed to you.

Anabolic steroid treatment in people with HIV

The anabolic steroids have been studied as a treatment for wasting caused by HIV, and have been shown to be safe and effective, helping the formation of lean muscle mass. To be most effective, anabolic steroid treatment should be combined with an exercise programme of resistance (weight) training.
Studies have mostly been restricted to men because of concerns about the side-effects of steroid treatment for women. Anabolic steroids, and testosterone, can damage the liver, and severe liver problems including liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and cancer have been seen in long-term users of anabolic steroids. If you are being prescribed them by your doctor, your liver function will be closely monitored.

Acne, male pattern baldness, sexual dysfunction, shrinking of the testicles, and the shutting down of natural production of testosterone can also be caused by anabolic steroids. Aggression, mood disturbances, stomach pain, an enlarged prostate and water retention can also develop as a consequence of steroid use. Breast enlargement in men, and the development of male characteristics in women have also been observed.

Testosterone replacement therapy in people with HIV

It is estimated that as many as 40% of HIV-positive men who are ill because of HIV have low levels of testosterone (hypogonadism). Low testosterone can result in decreased appetite, depression, poor metabolism of food and sexual problems, including the inability to obtain and maintain an erection.

A blood test can show if you have low levels of testosterone and your doctor may prescribe either a short course of oral testosterone replacement therapy, testosterone patches or testosterone gel.

Although testosterone is usually considered to be the male sexual hormone, it also occurs naturally in women. Testosterone patches have been examined as a treatment for wasting caused by HIV in women. It was found that weight and quality of life improved for some of the women and the development of male characteristics was not reported.

Oxandrolone

Oxandrolone -  Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone.

Certain clinical effects and adverse reactions demonstrate the androgenic properties of this class of drugs. Complete dissociation of anabolic and androgenic effects has not been achieved. The actions of anabolic steroids are therefore similar to those of male sex hormones with the possibility of causing serious disturbances of growth and sexual development if given to young children. Anabolic steroids suppress the gonadotropic functions of pituitary and may exert a direct effect. During exogenous administration of anabolic androgens, endogenous testosterone release is inhibited through inhibition of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH). At large doses, spermatogenesis may be suppressed through feedback inhibition of pituitary follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Oxandrolone have been reported to increase low-density lipo-proteins and decrease high-density lipoproteins. These levels revert to normal on discontinuation of treatment. In a single dose pharmaceutical study of Oxandrolone in elderly subjects, the mean elimination half-life was 13.3 hours. In a previous single dose pharmacokinetic study in younger volunteers, the mean elimination half-life was 10.4 hours.

The correlation between plasma level and therapeutic effect has not been defined.

Nandrolone Decanoate treatment

Nandrolone is used for: managing anemia caused by kidney problems. Nandrolone may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Nandrolone is an anabolic steroid. It works by increasing the growth of certain tissues in the body and has been shown to improve the oxygen-carrying ability of blood by increasing hemoglobin and the size of red blood cells.

Nandrolone is a modification of testosterone (carbon atom removed from the 19th position) With an Anabolic/Androgenic ratio: 125:37, meaning it is highly anabolic (muscle building) and moderately androgenic (male characteristics). Due to nandrolones chemical structure it only aromatizes (converts to estrogen) slightly, at about 20% the rate of testosterone when it interacts with the aromatase enzyme. Ergo, estrogenic effects are not a major concern with its use. Of note, however, is that nandrolone is a progestin with a binding affinity of 20% to the progesterone receptor(PgR), so side effects are still possible, though rare. The development of breast tissue in males (gynecomastia) has been reported in some steroid.com users. One of the most popular anabolic steroid used in bodybuilding cycles, nandrolone is also (medically) used to treat severe debility or disease states and refractory anemias. It promotes tissue building processes, reverses catabolism (muscle destruction) and stimulates erythropoiesis (red blood cell production). This makes it a very useful drug to treat wasting disorders such as advanced H.I.V. and also, makes it highly sought after by bodybuilders and athletes.

Nandrolone is most commonly found with a cypionate, laurate, decanoate or plenylpropionate ester. Briefly explained, the ester determines how much of the given hormone is released over a period of time. Longer esters such as decanoate peak slowly and can keep stable blood plasma levels up to ten days, shorter esters such as the phenylpropionate peak more rapidly but the half-live is shorter. Shorter esters usually release much more active hormone per mg than longer esters, and of course, allow the drugs effects to leave your system more quickly.. Surprisingly NPP (Durabolin) and ND (Deca) release almost the same amount of active nandrolone per 100mgs: 69% and 65% respectively; this does not correlate exactly though because blood levels of nandrolone are much higher (about doubled) post NPP usage compared to the same 100mg dose of ND. (see chart) NPP also has more distinct advantages over ND. One of the most common complaints about adding ND (Deca) to a cycle is the water retention that accompanies its use. Gains from NPP are reported to be "clean" with minimal water retention and fat gain. While ND is usually used in "bulking" cycles, NPP is used in "cutting" cycles although either drug can be used in either regard. Being an oil based anabolic it is injected intramuscularly (into the muscle), many users inject it ED or EOD, however NPP can administered E4D without problems.

Complete recovery is possible? HIV and stem cells

After the success of antiretroviral therapy for HIV by the scientific community had the next goal - to develop the means to completely rid the body of the virus. That this is possible at all, it became clear after the event, Timothy Brown, who has been HIV-positive for as long as he in 2007 was not transplanted donor stem cells for the treatment of leukaemia. As a result, his body is completely rid of HIV, including the fact that the donor cells lacked a key receptor required for virus entry into the cell.

At the Washington conference was addressed by infectious disease hospital of the Boston Brigham and Women's  (Timothy Henrich). He spoke of two of their HIV-positive patients who were transplanted stem cells, which present the same receptor. In addition, prior to transplantation, they were smaller than Brown, the dose of chemotherapy, and during the procedure, patients Henricha, unlike Brown, continued receiving antiviral drugs.

Stem cells do not take effect immediately, but ten months after transplantation, both patients were found in the blood of any traces of HIV.After transplantation, the two men developed the disease "graft-versus-host" when donor immune cells attack the cells of the "host", which they recognize as foreign. Believed Henrich and his colleagues, it is a state helped the patient's body to get rid of HIV - antivirals protected donor cells from the virus, and then destroy healthy cells Infected "master" cells. Currently the team Henricha watching cure HIV patients, as a key moment in the story is the following: does status quo after withdrawal of antiviral drugs.

"Soap Opera" and HIV prevention in women

Daily Pageviews educational series can significantly affect the sexual behavior of women, says an expert on HIV Rachel Jones of Rutgers University (Newark, NJ). She presented at the conference filmed by her and her colleagues, 12-episode "soap opera" called "Love, sex, and choice," promotes safer sexual behavior. According to Jones, this show spectators standing at 19 percent less likely to engage in risky sex (meaning, unprotected sex with casual partners or drug use) than women in the control group receiving SMS-messages about the dangers of such behavior.

The four characters of this film Jones, by analogy with the TV series "Love in the City", are in precarious situations with their relationships with the opposite sex, in which they must make the right choice. "Women love the video - said Jones. - They are reviewed by a series of two or three times."
